How Total Laser Resurfacing Works

By Scott Walker

As we age, our skins tend to become thinner and reveal scars, wrinkles and superficial lines. The same effect may be seen with prolonged exposure to sunlight. Total laser resurfacing is one of the options available in Cincinnati, OH used to reduce the appearance of these conditions. Some of the reasons as to why it is greatly preferred over other modalities include its ability to give results more rapidly, the fact that it has less side effects and that it is associated with less pain.

Wrinkling and superficial lines are the results of old and damaged collagen tissue. The tissue is located within the dermis layer of the skin. A laser beam is used to damage the collagen further so that newer collagen fibers can grow. The growth occurs over the next few weeks and month to crater smoother, more youthful skin. Usually, the epidermis which is the most superficial skin layer, is unaffected.

Virtually anyone who has the desire to improve the appearance of their skin is a potential candidate; there is no strict criteria to be met. At the same time, no major contraindications to the treatment exist. One of the few requirements that one is requirement is to stop any drugs that may increase the risk of bleeding such as aspirin and blood thinners. Smoking may prolong the time needed for recovery and should be stopped as well.

The treatment can be easily administered in a private office as long as the required equipment is available. It is also important to note that very little preparation is needed before one is subjected to the procedure. Since some patients may experience some discomfort, sedation or topical anesthesia may be administered. On average, a single session lasts between thirty minutes and one hour.

The number of sessions that are required to yield results is dependent on the magnitude of the problem. For the majority of people, a single session is adequate. If there is a need for additional sessions, these can be done at intervals of six weeks. The six weeks break gives a chance to the collagen to regenerate before subsequent treatments are given.

The time that is required to heal is variable and is determined by the depth of the peel. Generally, the average person would require between 3 and 7 days. Within minutes of having the procedure, they may have itchiness and a sunburn sensation. A residual red or pink color may be seen in lighter skin tones. These patches can, fortunately be covered using makeup.

While you do not dressings for the skin during recovery there are a number of products that may be of benefit. Such products include hyper emollient creams, antibiotics and sun blocks. If you have a problem with the residual red colored patches make up may come in handy. Persons with darker skin often notice dark pigments which may be quite unsightly. One of the ways of dealing with this is to use a bleaching agent.

Laser resurfacing is one of the most effective methods of restoring skin vitality. However, it is worth noting that results are not uniform; they vary from one person to another. The expectations should be in line with the severity of the initial problem.
